Scientists in Buffalo, N.Y., have created a new human-mouse hybrid with “the highest incidence of human cells ever recorded.” In fact, four percent of its cells are human.

But, the scientists note:

[N]one of the developing germline tissue—which goes on to create eggs or sperm—contained traces of human cells. That’s somewhat reassuring, since chimeras with the ability to reproduce could become an ethical nightmare.

What’s the point? To create animals for testing that more accurately show how a human might be affected.
