Fantastic voyagers

German scientists have made microscopic robots — tiny glass spheres coated with a magnetic nanofilm on one side (to control it), and a drug treatment on the other. The robots are small enough* to move through the bloodstream, and designed to be able to move against the flow.

The researchers were able to steer the robots through a (synthetic) blood system to the site of cancer cells, where they attached themselves; UV light then released the drug.

* No more than 7.8 micrometers — smaller than red blood cells. Yes, you can say “Wow.”
