Brood IX is coming
Are you in North Carolina, Virginia, or West Virginia? Maybe the Roanoke, Va., area in particular? Get ready for some noise.
Brood IX, the every-17-years flood of cicadas, will be coming out of the ground soon, turning quiet summer nights (and days) into a cacophony of giant flying bugs looking for a little sumthin’-sumthin’.
These cicadas will begin to emerge approximately when the soil 8″ beneath the ground reaches 64 degrees Fahrenheit. A nice, warm rain will often trigger an emergence.

I took this one in 2004, when Brood X emerged in Ohio.
